  • A puppet needs to have character and dramatic presence. A puppet that is neither here nor there in character isn't going to grab anyone's attention and after all it is meant to be an entertainer!!
  • Puppets have to be well made and able to move, to be light and strong.
  • Clothes have to be made from scratch - ie no ready made clothes,
  • The head, hands and feet can be made before the exam as long as they are painted and assembled in it

1. Research and brainstorm your title. Ask yourself what is the personality of your puppet and how can you show that through facial expression, facial features, hair, colour or by adding clothing or props.

2. Research other puppet, masks, caricatures  etc.

3. Design possible outcomes. What you do on paper now will save you time creating later. Also good creations come from extended research and thumbnail sketching.

4.Do your research drawings.(Why bother? These drawings will help you understand how to create them in 3.d.  It also helps the design process.)

5. Make it!!

Creating a monochromatic painted portrait through shape, colour and tone.

Complete a self portrait grid drawing. If you are struggling to remember how to do this follow the link below.(Remember however you are not enlarging your drawing. Both your photo and your drawing are A4 therefore the measurements on the photo and the sketchbook are exactly the same.)

Using your tonal scale decide which areas will go dark, medium and light and paint in you tint and shade accordingly.

1st year colour

Research how to make brown and paint each section of Roy's hair different shades of brown.
Explain monochromatic below the monochromatic boxes.

Make a simple loop line drawing inside a drawn rectangle in the middle of your sketchbook page, if you can't remember how to do it, follow the instructions in the link below. Title the page Tints and Shades.

Pick your favourite colour and paint one section, then a make a tint of this colour by adding a small bit of white and paint the next slice, keep doing this until you reach the palest shade of your favourite colour. So you should have one row of your favourite colour progressively lighter. If you are not at the end of the row when you reach your lightest tint then get the reverse effect by making your tints getting progressively darker till you reach back to your favourite colour.
In the next section do the same but this time create a shade by adding black so your favourite colour is getting progressively darker. TIP you only need a tiny bit of black each time, too much will make too dark too quickly!!
